Module 5Lesson 5.9

Check 3 things before you publish: hands, letters and lips

How one video is made · Lesson 9 of 9

A close-up of a phone in a man's hand, with a paused video showing a hand holding a birthday cake.

The video is ready. You are about to send it to the bakery owner who ordered it.

You watch it one last time on your phone, full screen. At second 7, the hand holding the cake has six fingers.

She would have seen it before you. And so would every person who watches it on her social media.

"The second you accept whatever quality the output is and decide to use that, you are locked in at that standard."

Kristian Jennings, AI ad maker

1. The hands

Artificial intelligence still makes mistakes with hands, even when the process is done right. Before you send a video, count the fingers and check:

  • that each hand has five fingers;
  • that the product stays in the same hand from one shot to the next;
  • that no object appears out of nowhere.

2. The letters on the product

The label is the first thing to warp: invented letters, a backwards logo, a word that changes from one frame to the next.

Compare each shot with the real photo of the product. If the label can't be read the same way, that shot is redone. The exact text, if needed, is added afterwards, on top of the video.

3. The lips

The mouth has to move with the words, without running ahead or falling behind. And in a far shot with a voice over it, the mouth does not move.

When the lips fail, there were almost always too many words for the seconds of the shot. Shortening the sentence usually fixes it.

How to check

  1. Watch the video full size, never as a thumbnail.
  2. Pause at every change of shot.
  3. Show it to someone at home without saying anything, and ask what caught their eye.
  4. Redo only the shot that fails. The others stay as they are.

Checking takes you a few minutes. A published mistake is seen by everyone who watches, and the client remembers it.

How would you rather do it?

Nobody sees your answer: it is just for you.
